Vietnam has announced a new aviation security regulation that will impose flight bans ranging from three months to a lifetime for passengers who violate aviation safety and security rules. The new decree will come into effect on 1 July 2026 and applies to both domestic flights and international flights departing from Vietnam.
What Has Changed?
Under the new regulation, passengers may face temporary or permanent flight bans depending on the severity and frequency of the violation.
Flight Ban of 3 to 12 Months
Passengers may be prohibited from flying for up to one year if they:
- Cause disturbances at airports or onboard aircraft
- Use forged or fraudulent travel documents
- Violate public order and safety regulations
- Make false bomb, explosive, chemical, biological, or radioactive threats
- Spread false information that disrupts aviation operations
Flight Ban of 12 to 24 Months
Longer bans may apply to passengers who:
- Repeat offences after previous penalties
- Unlawfully interfere with civil aviation operations or airport activities
Lifetime Flight Ban
Permanent flight bans may be imposed on individuals involved in:
- Aircraft hijacking
- Riots or violent acts at airports
- Serious interference with aviation security
- Repeated violations after previous flight-ban penalties
What Does This Mean for Travelers?
The new rules are primarily aimed at strengthening aviation security and ensuring passenger safety. Genuine tourists and business travelers who comply with airport and airline regulations will not be affected.
Travelers are advised to:
- Carry valid and authentic travel documents
- Follow airport security instructions
- Avoid making jokes or false statements related to bombs or security threats
- Respect airline crew and airport authorities at all times
Failure to comply could result in significant penalties, including restrictions on future air travel within and from Vietnam.
